| Our Visit to Healthworks
For January’s program, CIRG members gathered not at the Riverfront Café but at the HealthWorks Wellness and Fitness Center in Erwin where about 25 retirees and guests were welcomed by Erika Utegg of the HealthWorks staff who conducted a tour of the facility. Your committee’s thinking ins scheduling this was to pass along encouragement to those of us who picked up a few extra pounds over the holidays.
Utegg prefaced her tour by summarizing the HealthWorks facility programs and services as an integral part of Guthrie Corning Hospital system. As such, the facility has on-site doctors and nurses who staff offices and health facilities located in the front areas of the complex. Beyond those medical offices, the facility opens up into a fully equipped fitness and re-hab facility with every type of fitness and exercise machine in two spacious areas beyond which is a large group exercise room. The swimming pool area includes a hot tub, a lap pool with handicap access ramp and a separate group exercise pool. Separate sauna and steam rooms are provided in the men’s and women’s l locker room areas.
Utegg noted that the doctors at Arnot-Ogden Hospital refer their patients to the HealthWorks as “the most effective cardiac fitness center” in the area. Participants who are following doctor-prescribed re-hab regimens may qualify for health insurance benefits to cover all or part of their programs.
Following Utegg’s introductory comments – during which each attendee received a free one-day pass to the facility – she led the whole group on a walking tour of the facility.
Like the group’s gatherings at the Riverfront Café, the coffee at the HealthWorks was free….and the parking was convenient.
The February meeting will see the CIRG back in the Café for a program on floral arranging by Tom Cortright, who will make a return visit with a popular program he presented last year – which included presenting the arrangements he created as door prizes. That will be repeated at the Feb. 10 program.
